In closing--I have not yet watched "L'Avventura" with the commentary by film historian Gene Youngblood--though I plan on doing so--as I did not want his opinions to influence my review of this picture. During the search, her lover and her best friend become attracted to each other. L'Avventura (English: "The Adventure") is a 1960 Italian film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni.Developed from a story by Antonioni with co-writers Elio Bartolini and Tonino Guerra, the film is about the disappearance of a young woman (Lea Massari) during a boating trip in the Mediterranean, and the subsequent search for her by her lover (Gabriele Ferzetti) and her best friend (Monica Vitti). When they are about to leave the island, they find Anna, the main character up to this point, has gone missing. Very little happened plot wise, but all you could want was on the faces if the two main characters. This is a world where people are portrayed as floating aimlessly in life. This is a film about people who have so little connection (moral or otherwise) to those beyond themselves that they seem to float in and out of people's lives. Which is frankly giving them too much credit--the characters are caught up in the routine of their upper-class malaise and are often as interested in suffering--as they are in enjoying light-hearted, jet-set-style insouciance of their cushy lives hanging out in 5-star hotels. The scenery is stunning, the dialogue makes you think, and Monica Vitti's outfits do not fail to impress. Some find this story dull but i found it intriguing and fascinating. "L'Avventura"(1960) was directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. These wealthy people are bored and spoiled characters who don't seem to have the desire, or ability to develop fulfilling relationships because they lack any goals or vision. This state of being is complimented by the film's style which lacks any real structure or drama as the movie drifts along following these two lovers towards a kind of malaise where they meet head on their emptiness, and despair. The extras are plentiful, as usual with Criterion and this is a film that rewards repeated viewing. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 19, 2018. Premier volet d'une trilogie (La Nuit, 1961, et L'Éclipse, 1962), il imposa Antonioni comme un des grands maîtres de la modernité cinématographique. Beautifully transferred by Criterion this take on love and relationships is quite hypnotic. Claudia (Monica Vitti) is the only one who seems to possess any compassion for Anna. Rentals include 30 days to start watching this video and 3 days to finish once started. How the picture looks is ultimately as important as whatever meaning it has for the viewer. While looking for the missing friend, Claudia and Sandro develop an attraction for each other. L'avventura est un film franco-italien de Michelangelo Antonioni, sorti en 1960. To exit, go to the drop down menu on the top right corner and select "Exit Kanopy Kids". You don't get the idea that the characters feel much of anything other than a vague sense of frustration and longing for something more out of life. When Claudia fully accepts Sandro's advances it seems to awaken her to life, but this is fleeting and tenuous. And even though Anna is not presumed to be dead she becomes little more than a figment of Sandro and Claudia's imagination. Although I still don't know if I love it--there is much about "L'Avventura" that I admire--especially the cinematography (by Aldo Scavarda) that makes use of architecture and the Sicilian countryside in the composition of its scenes. Or is she too callous herself? Sandro, Anna’s boyfriend, and Claudia, Anna’s friend, try without success to find her. Does Anna disappear because she is too fragile to deal with her relationship with Sandro? I hoped that I would like this more.
