Nicht so stark und vor allem nicht so konsequent, wie der ARD-Mittwochs-Film die Woche zuvor (AUF KURZE DISTANZ), aber weit besser (und wieder emotional packender) als der gefällige öffentlich rechtliche Durchschnitt.
Director Steve McQueen ("Shame", "Twelve Years a Slave") is a master of cinematic craft. The adolescent Milan discovers his own suspected homosexuality at the age of 17 and the consequences for him and his family but also the liberation as he understands why he has been so down and rebellious. It's a beautiful looking film, but it's all a bit 'meh'. He functions very well in his daily business but as soon as it comes to close encounters with the other sex he is completely unable to deal with it. This movie reminded me a lot of "Suicide Room" showing how really a family environment and prejudice can make a young person (gay or not) be taken by depression... Milan is truly an ass; being gay isn't a "I get to pull shitty stunts and get away free" card, and shame on this movie for going down that route.
