The combat was the brilliant business-as-usual for Platinum Games, but the stark open-world design felt restricted and far removed from the vast cornucopias we’ve seen in recent years. Supplemented by a hypnotic soundtrack, there’s a haunting tranquility to Automata’s post-human world; flora flourishes in the fecund city ruins (which give a whole new take on the phrase ‘urban jungle’), and the wildlife – boars and moose, mostly – has grown gigantic (and rideable, noteworthy if for no other reason than ‘fun’). You can, for example, use the nearly game-breaking combination of ‘Offensive Heal’ and ‘Deadly Heal’, which encourages a Bloodborne-style approach by rewarding you with health for damage you do and enemies you kill.
I’ve never really been one for slogging through a game twice, but when the credits rolled after my first playthrough, I was presented with a message more or less pleading me to have a second go. Combat -- involving swords and guns -- is generally between androids and robots, but both sides appear sentient.

The acoustic experience in NieR: Automata can contend with the best that gaming has ever had to offer. Ever the sucker for a good grovel, I bit, and found that the playthrough offered a new perspective on events, complete with new mechanics, new cut-scenes, and whole new gameplay sequences. Parents need to know that Nier: Automata is an action role-playing game with significant violence. Meanwhile, those with more powerful rigs can push it beyond what even the previously dominant PS4 Pro version is capable of. Although Square Enix's efforts to bring its Final Fantasy games over to Steam has helped tremendously in this regard, their arrival several years later makes them more difficult to appreciate.
