We have the Swiss Travel Pass and are staying in Berne. With its lake tower and splendid park, this medieval castle manages to rival its magnificent setting.
Before you know it, you'll be wising you were based out of the Lauterbrunnen valley and were planning a daytrip to Bern. Take all of this in and more on the best day trips from Bern. On the way back down, as time allows, you can stop at Murren and Gimmelwald.

That would give them most of the day to quickly explore in a superficial way Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, the valley floor and Mürren, depart Lauterbrunnen at 1532, arrive Thun at 1632, (service every 3o minutes) walk down toward the river and look around a bit. You're booking a one way private car trip from Bern to Grindelwald with a local driver. I'd recommend Lauterbrunnen/Mürren/Wengen, or some of same, instead of Grindelwald. You can also rent a bike. And, if they really mean "early start," the first train from Bern is at 0604. ;-). You can do that.
You don't have to decide until you get there. Lauterbrunnen is also a neat little village you will pass through on the way to and from Stechelberrg, we usually stay there and use it as a base assuming we can pry ourselves away from the view from our hotel room balcony.
Sandwiched in between sheer cliffs, this valley is known for its 72 waterfalls. More than likely, they'll see enough to make a return trip a probability....in September.
