Employees of the monastery shared a festive brunch with the community on February 24. On February ninth, priest friends and monks of the three New Jersey Abbeys were invited to Vespers and dinner to celebrate the feast of St. Scholastica, the twin sister of St. Benedict.

Urban dioceses have seen a 27.5% drop in enrollment in Catholic elementary schools nationally; previously there were fifteen Catholic elementary schools in the City of Elizabeth, and currently there are only two schools remaining in the city. This is a time to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit if the Lord is calling you to be an Oblate. Both had some previous experience with the community and knew many of the sisters. The Oblate Novice will also begin living the prayer life of an Oblate during this period. Benedictine Sisters of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia joined the festivities. The meat is usually grilled by one of the Oblates. They are strongly committed to peace, justice, and service both within their own communities and to the world. The Benedictine Sisters began teaching in Elizabeth, NJ when Reverend Peter Henry Lempke, pastor, invited Benedictine Sisters in Newark to teach German immigrant children at St. Michael’s parish school. When during the discernment you desire to begin Oblate Formation you may make an application to begin the Oblate Novitiate. Sister Lauren Trinh’s many friends gathered on April 14 to celebrate her 25 years of monastic profession.

Our low enrollment for the past few years has resulted in a deficit at the end of each fiscal year.

An Oblate does not necessarily need to be a Catholic but they do need to be practicing in the Christian Church. Visiting the monastery and speaking with the Oblate Director is desirable during this period. Springtime generally found students anxiously awaiting the hatching of baby chicks or the birth of guinea pigs. The latest one was held at the Academy of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, NJ. The community misses the presence of the preschool children and will miss Michelle and the various preschool events especially her annual slide show reviewing the many activities of the children during the year. Speaking with a reporter for Catholic New York about the Benedictine Sisters, Father Scafidi said " I gave a thank you to them for everything they were able to accomplish and for all they did in the 118 years they were here.
