Pam was born in Maryland and raised outside Philadelphia. I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end. As the narrative moves from Philadelphia to Germany, Poland, and Italy, we are given glimpses of the lives that the anniversary clock has touched over the past century, and learn about the love affair that turned a brother into a traitor. There is a very cliche love story that is repeatedly discussed and thought about, which ultimately, ruined the book for me. This was one I got through my Kindle subscription and it was definitely worth it. I recommend this Pam Jenoff book, I’m a fan of her writings. It's like two different people wrote this book about a man, accused of WWII war crimes and the attorneys search for a way to defend him. I have already posted my review of the first novel, and this is the review of "The Things We Cherished", a historical fiction novel with romance. It made the alternating chapters from the present day so much more meaningful, and still gave me the opportunity to try and figure out how it was going to come together in the end. I was very disappointed with the ending of the main storyline. Centering the historical aspects on the anniversary clock allowed the reader to see the full sentimental value that it held for all the lives it touched after its creation. This talented writer could have done better. I read this because the author is coming to town soon and I was contemplating going to see her. But the flow is interrupted by a love story between the attorneys so that this portion feels like it was written by a 12-year-old girl. For example, the obvious love from one of the male attorneys, is consistently misinterpreted by the female. Then, alas, this talented wri. Narrated by Kirsten Potter. Obvious and silly. That’s all. Had it been three times as long, and had the author frankly been a better writer, this would have been as good as any classic.

The 1900's timeline is interesting, creative, and the better part of the book; while the 2009 timeline has an, at times, weak protagonist who repetitively talks about her love life. The characters felt shallow and undeveloped, and as a lawyer myself, I found Charlotte and the other modern characters cliche and unbelievable at times. I love this book. This is another work where I’m not 100% sure whether I liked the dual storyline or not. It’s been a few years since I’ve read one but I remember being completely gripped by the storylines.
