These panels, which could form an installation, reveal a great deal about the positioning of Petyarre’s work both within traditional Aboriginal culture, and in dialogue with contemporary art practices. For example, Petyarre’s major, 21-panel work, Awely for the mountain devil lizard (Twenty-one women), 1996, refers simultaneously to ceremonial body painting as sourced in stories relating to Arnkerrth, the mountain devil lizard, and to a larger cosmology that is foundational in Petyarre’s painting. We have held over 200 Aboriginal art exhibitions and hold stock of over 4,500 artworks. Exhibitions: Once of her first paintings on canvas was commissioned by CAAMA (The Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association) and included in the exhibition titled Utopia Women’s Painting: The First Works of Canvas; a Summer Project 1988-1989.
