Mio Amakura finds the camera tossed away in a corner of the Osaka House in Minakami Village. Fatal frames are more difficult to attain, as they commonly last only one second and must be "found" in a ghost's attack. The Camera Obscura, along with the Flashlight, is a staple item in the Fatal Frame series.

In the Fatal Frame Series, there are several different kinds of film that can be used in conjunction with the Camera Obscura. Without any film loaded, the camera is unable to take photographs. The higher the level, the more effective the camera will be. The first Camera Obscura Dr. Asou considered functional was given to his friend Seijiro Makabe, a folklorist who took the camera along with him to research All God's Village. It is used in the FPS mode of the game, and has its own unique capture circle and camera interface. Dr. Asou donated this camera to Rougetsu Island as a token of his appreciation for their assistance, which helped him improve the design. These variables include proximity to the target, whether the target is centered, the amount of damage inflicted, the amount of targets captured at once and many others.
Dr. Asou and his assistants were responsible for creating more than one Camera Obscura, sevenĀ of which have been featured in the games so far. Ruka and Madoka utilize a Camera Obscura that has become a display inside the Kunihiko Asou Museum on the island, and Misaki brings with her a camera that was passed down her family. After inserting the spirit orb, obtained points can be used to upgrade the function or lens.
The four investigate the island, revealing what had occurred ten years ago and recovering their lost memories of Rougetsu Island.
Dr. Asou created his first prototype camera which he entrusted to the descendants of his family, noting that while it captured images of strong thoughts on film, he was certain it could be improved to capture spirits as well.[1]. In Spirit Camera, viewfinder mode is the default view throughout the game.
