To become shogun, you need to be daimyo or independent daimyo and conquer Kyoto. Question. So I am a daiymo and used the war for emperor cb and beat the emperor and fully annexed him and now I have all the daiymo's as my vassal, but in the Government tab it still shows that I am a daiymo and am currently losing 4 dip a month because of all the vassals.

Certain diplomatic actions can't be pursued if Shogun's power is too high or too low. Could be related to non daimyo taking Kyoto. You automaticallty get a core, become the new shogun, and with the +3 diplo rep as Shogun you can get (almost) all daimyo's instantly loyal (except Hosokawa, who is pissed for some reason). I believe you're meant to not demand independence, the shogunate collapses if Kyoto is taken out of the empire by any means.
