There's a panel-by-panel maze involving a lost cat, an endless runner, a sword-fighting game, even a playable opera recital. Alongside the enemy creatures, peaceful anthromophised birds desperately attempt to protect what’s left of their home from the claws of the behemoth that plagues them. Moving further down, he runs into the first of the game’s many mechanical dogs that will chase and violently pounce on him if caught, resulting in a quick restart. To say the pacing is stellar is almost an understatement. His work has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, the New Yorker and elsewhere. NOT a platformer. Players looking for a creepy story that leaves them wondering what is next for these characters and this world, however, will not find much to theorize about. I can see a ton of inspiration from classic games and even some films.
Painted kites eye you with tigrish amusement. Creaks isn’t all that original, but it feels right at home within the genre, and it's a solid addition to its growing roster of titles. Mostly, you’re figuring out the correct sequence, trapping one enemy here in order to activate a sliding door over there, with an emphasis on planning and logistics rather than running or jumping.
Taken on their own, the various systems and ideas in Creaks aren't completely original. Beautiful art style, super creative mini-games, great puzzles. You can exploit this to pull them out of position while you're off doing something else, like pushing a button to raise the drawbridge between the dog and the area's exit. Games that employ this particular style must attempt to bathe the player in the overwhelming atmosphere while also providing fulfilling and interesting gameplay. The story is eerie but whimsical, a bedtime read for the kind of child who spies monsters in wallpaper patterns. All of these creatures will kill you instantly if you bumble into them, but you'll need to "collaborate" with them to solve puzzles. In some ways, it feels like a refinement of the formula that Jonathan Blow's Braid brought to the mainstream in 2008. One cannot play through the titles this game will be inevitably compared to and not be interested in what it all means.
Propped on or near the walls behind him are a variety of knickknacks: bicycle wheels, crockery, clothes hung up on lines, etc. Amanita Design's latest is a game of vast but delicate imagination, at once rambling and toy-like. There are a lot of twists on the idea with different enemy types and ways to manipulate their stationary selves that makes for a gripping campaign. It would have been wonderful to see this team’s giant imagination expressed through the subversion of, rather than adherence to, well-worn puzzle platform conventions, but perhaps that is just plain greedy.
The puzzles themselves are a fair challenge.
